Food, hotel and catering services for the ship's complement, passengers and guests onboard a Canadian Coast Guard Ship

Cook/Deckhand SC STD 03

Provides food and catering services to ship's complement and passengers. General shipboard maintenance and husbandry, and performance of deck operations as part of work programs aboard a Canadian Coast Guard ship as directed by the Commanding Officer.

Intent of the process

This is an anticipatory process. The intent of this selection process is to create a pool of qualified candidates to be used to staff casual, term and indeterminate opportunities within the Canadian Coast Guard.

You must meet all essential qualifications in order to be appointed to the position. Other qualifications may be a deciding factor in choosing the person to be appointed. Some essential and other qualifications will be assessed through your application. It is your responsibility to provide appropriate examples that illustrate how you meet each qualification. Failing to do so could result in your application being rejected.

OCCUPATIONAL CERTIFICATION:

Possession of a Cook certificate issued by a recognized institute or a TC Ship’s Cook Certificate

Possession of Valid Marine Emergency Duties certificates (STCW Basic Safety [A1 & B2]

Depending on the position being staffed, any of the asset qualifications may also be deemed as an essential qualification and only candidates and persons with a priority entitlement who possess those qualifications will be considered for that specific vacancy. ASSET QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid MED B1* - Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats

*Note that this is required for periods of employment in excess of 6 months. Applicants may be screened into the pool without Proficiency in Survival Craft & Rescue Boats other than Fast Rescue Boats [B1] but must acquire it for any staffing longer than 6 months.

ASSET EXPERIENCE

• Experience working as a Cook onboard a Canadian Coast Guard vessel.

• Experience working as a Cook onboard a ship or in a commercial establishment.

• Experience working as a Steward on a vessel or experience in Hospitality/Hotel Services; or providing professional housekeeping; or janitorial services; or services with the food industry

• Experience working as a Deckhand

For SC-STD-05 Chief Cook Only:

• Experience as a Chief Cook/Lead Cook on a Coast Guard Vessel or Commercial Vessel or in a Commercial establishment.

• Experience supervising staff

ORGANIZATIONAL NEEDS

Membership in one of the designated Employment Equity Groups

Conditions of employment

Reliability Status security clearance

• Willingness to be deployed in the Atlantic Region

• Must be willing and able to travel by air, land or by sea

• Must be willing to go to sea for prolonged periods of time (including Arctic Waters) and in adverse weather conditions

• Valid Health Canada Medical for seagoing personnel

• Maintain a Valid Certificate of Competency

• Willingness to wear and maintain uniform and personal protective equipment to Coast Guard Standards

• Willingness and ability to work overtime as required

• For vessels assigned primarily to Search and Rescue operations, employees must be within 30 minutes response time to the vessel during assigned work period.

• Valid Canadian Passport (for identified positions)

• Adherence to Canadian Coast Guard Respiratory Protection Program

• Compliance with the CCG Safety Management System and Standards

Rates of pay:

SC-STD-03: $26.75 per hour

SC-STD-04: $27.61 per hour

SC-STD-05: $28.51 per hour

Please be prepared to provide copies of Testimonials of Sea Service or where they do not exist, copies of discharge books if requested. These may be used to validate the experience factors.

Please be prepared to provide proof of occupational certification when requested. An interview may be administered.
