We are currently accepting applications for a Marine Superintendent of Health, Safety & Environment to work with our Health, Safety & Environment Department at either our Port aux Basques, NL or North Sydney NS location. 

The Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Department is responsible for the development and promotion of health, safety and environmental protection programs throughout the company, both on vessels and at our shore facilities. 

Reporting to the Director of HSE, this leadership role will require the successful candidate to provide marine expertise in assisting with the development of an integrated safety management program, including assisting with the development of safety strategies and oversight for safety programs to manage key risks, improve Marine Atlantic’s safety culture and ultimately improve safety performance. The Marine Superintendent of HSE will also be responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of environmental management initiatives to monitor, evaluate and improve Marine Atlantic’s environmental performance.

The Marine Superintendent of HSE will be responsible to fulfill the Designated Person Ashore (DPA) role and associated requirements as described in the International Safety Management (ISM) code. The Marine Superintendent of HSE will provide marine HSE and technical support to the Director of HSE, and the HSE team. This position will work with vessel management to coordinate, initiate and participate in key audits, inspections and meetings with both internal and external parties to ensure safety and environment requirements are being met.

The Marine Superintendent of HSE will be required to be on call 24 hours a day, act as a resource during HSE emergency situations, support, and provide input to the Company’s Emergency Response Team during maritime emergencies.

Additional Key Areas of Responsibility Include:

  • Work diligently, to promote a safe working environment;
  • Ensure systems and procedures are followed and make recommendations for improvements to drive excellence in HSE performance;
  • Play a key role in the development and delivery of organizational safety strategies;
  • Manage and report on the corporation’s HSE audit and workplace inspection programs to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, and company HSE policies;
  • Review the existing safety management program and procedures and make appropriate recommendations for updates as necessary;
  • Lead in the implementation of hazard prevention programs and assess effectiveness of these programs;  
  • Identify training needs for the HSE team;
  • Lead and assist in incident  investigations as required;
  • Monitor incident reporting to ensure effective investigation, corrective action and assist with closure of incidents;
  • Development of HSE management and Board of Director reports;
  • Play a key role in HSE communication strategies to vessel employees;
  • Assist the Health & Safety Manager in defining and coordinating Safety Officer vessel activities;
  • Assist with SMS reviews as required under SMS and OHS Policy;

Qualifications Required:

Education:

  • Transport Canada issued STCW 95 Certification of Competency as:

a. Master, Near Coastal; or

b. First-Class Engineer (Motor Ship)

Work Experience:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ progressive management experience

Assets:

  • Master Mariner – STCW 95
  • A degree in maritime field (management, engineering, or physical science) from a recognized university
  • Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP) designation orequivalent
  • Background in Engineering

Essential Experience:

  • Considerable understanding of the principles regarding an employer’s responsibility in terms of OH&S and Environment
  • Skilled in MS Office Programs (i.e. Word, Excel)
  • Sound judgment and problem solving skills
  • Ability to analyze business needs and think strategically
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Ability to present viewpoints and ideas effectively in both written and oral form
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of internal and external contacts. (i.e. unions, employees, regulatory agencies, etc.)
  • Proven team player with the ability to work collaborativel
