OUTFITTING DESIGN ENGINEERINGT SPECIALIST

Reporting to the Outfitting Design Engineer, the OUTFITTING DESIGN ENGINEERING SPECIALIST is responsible for undertaking a defined range of whole-ship integration activities including outfit systems, compartment design in line with all relevant processes and quality requirements. He supplies advice and support to internal and external customers ensuring defined objectives are achieved while continually maintaining quality and service requirements for the new ferry program.

Outfit includes the design or operation of deck coverings, coatings, insulation and linings, accommodation and wet spaces, medical spaces, ship’s access and escape (e.g., doors, hatches, ladders. etc.), evacuation and lifesaving, removal routes, commissariat, galley and laundry, offices, stores (including refrigerated) and workshops, portable firefighting equipment, compartment, and product safety.

  • Develop ship design specifications and carry out activities in line with specifications and all quality/technical standards (e.g., development of packages and arrangements).
  • Participate in developing, maintaining, and modifying outfit processes and procedures in response to technical developments and operational needs.
  • Carry out technical analyses and investigations, including evaluation and selection of technical options, and prepare reports with suggested recommendations to support the design of improvements.
  • Contribute to process improvement within the operational and/or engineering team to deliver continuous improvements in quality, cycle time and asset utilization.
  • Produce layout drawings for Outfit compartments for review by stakeholders and to correctly model these spaces.
  • Update compartment data to ensure it correctly presents the baseline design.
  • Prepare technical equipment specifications, develop designs in line with all specifications and standards and co-ordinate with suppliers to ensure delivery to the agreed specification.
  • Liaise with customers and/or suppliers in assigned areas on engineering matters.
  • Review, check and sign off calculations/documents completed by Outfit Engineers.
  • Make engineering decisions within own sphere of responsibility and delegated authority.
  • Contribute to engineering team decisions to support the effective performance of the team.
  • Answer technical queries about own work within their level of knowledge and competency.
  • Produce Procurement Pack documentation.
  • Co-ordinate with systems engineers and designers on the integration of Outfit systems.
  • Support and attend FATs, HATs and SATs during the build, commissioning, and trial phases.
  • Support acceptance activities for Outfit facilities and equipment.
  • Support HAZIDs, Design, Zonal and Safety Reviews.
  • Support general business and other design and integration activities.
Qualifications
  • Degree in a relevant discipline.
  • A minimum of 2 years in relevant experience in a similar position in shipbuilding/ship repair.
  • Previous relevant experience in marine engineering or related industry.
  • Previous relevant experience in an outfit and ship design environment.
  • Working towards the requirements for registration as Incorporated Engineer or Chartered Engineer with the Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec.
  • Strong competencies in Microsoft Office product suite.
  • Ability to work confidently and independently while prioritizing a large volume of work.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and ability to effectively interact with individuals at all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing to management and peers.
  • Understanding detail design requirements as immediate customer in engineering life cycle.
  • Experience with computer-aided design (CAD) software like AutoCAD or FORAN is desirable.
  • A candidate with fluency in the French language would be advantageous but not essential, Davie will provide French language training courses.
