The O/S is responsible for carrying out the physical tasks involved in vessel manouvering through locks, in vessel docking, in loading and unloading cargo and supplies by crane and manually, in cleaning the vessel, and in general and continuous maintenance of the vessel while in port and while underway. There may be 1 to 3 O/S’s on any given vessel (3 on a self-unloader), so assistance is often available from another O/S or an O/S on Watch for the heavier tasks. He is responsible to take direction from the Mates regarding specific jobs assigned, and is responsible for the above regular duties, plus any additional tasks required of him by the Master.
