Three types of Search and Rescue, Program Officer positions are available :

  • Stream 1 : Program Officer, Driving small craft 
  • Stream 2 : Program Officer, Emergency First Responder
  • Stream 3 : Program Officer, Inshore Rescue Boat (IRB) student program

 

Description:

Join a team of passionate people! Our Training Officers contribute to the development and maintenance of search and rescue skills for more than one hundred employees of the Canadian Coast Guard and emergency services partners. You could be called upon to respond to a search and rescue mission during a marine incident, be the victim of an advanced first aid simulation for the training of rescue specialists and teach your passion to professionals on duty in Canada. As a trainer, you may be able to develop your skills in an active and emotional environment.

 

Requirements for the three Program Officer streams:

  • Secondary school diploma or an acceptable combination of education, training and/or experience.
  • Recent and significant* experience in tactical emergency search and rescue response operations.
  • Recent and significant* experience in establishing relations with public and private partners.
  • Knowledge of the roles and the responsibility of the Search and Rescue's main partners in Canada.
  • Knowledge of search and rescue practice and procedure during a maritime incident.
  • Bilingual imperative (BBB/BBB) for positions located in Quebec or English essential for positions located in Sarnia.
  • Ability to analyze and solve problems.
  • Ability to apply operational standards and procedures within a regulatory framework.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to communicate orally.
  • Ability to communicate in writing.
  • Integrity and respect.
  • Judgement.
  • Working effectively as a part of a team.
  • Initiative and action orientated.

 

Experience and knowledge required only for STREAM 1 (Program Officer, Driving small craft):

  • Experience in driving fast small craft (less than 15 Gross Tonnage) with a minimum of 15 hours at the command of the small craft in stormy sea conditions ( winds >30 knots and/or visibility< 2 nautical miles) acquired within the last 5 years.
  • Knowledge of small outboard engines.
  • Knowledge of maritime navigational collision regulations.

 

Experience and knowledge required only for STREAM 2 (Program Officer, Emergency First Responder) :

  • Recent and significant* experience as Emergency First Responder.
  • Knowledge of advanced first aid techniques.

 

Experience and knowledge required only for STREAM 3 (Program Officer, Inshore Rescue Boat (IRB) student program) :

Recent and significant* experience in executing the student in-shore rescue boat program (IRB).

 

* Recent and significant means: an experience which lasted a minimum of 2 years and acquired within the last 5 years or a minimum of 2 summer seasons as coxswain within the IRB program and acquired within the last 5 years.
