Job description

As an AUTOMATION ENGINEERING SPECIALIST, you must provide technical direction and analysis of a vessel’s automation system, to ensure the vessels full operational integrity during service.

More specifically, you will: 

  • Undertake a full system analysis, when applied to new build, retrofit installations, or ship repair projects, to determine if a seagoing vessels automation system is fit for purpose to ensure the effective control and operation of a vessels electrical and machinery system. 
  • Evaluate the implementation and robustness of a systems’ operating and software system when applied to a Marine application.
  • Act as the active lead design authority to develop all onboard wiring and instrumentation loop diagrams, system mimics and power management systems.
  • Interface with Davie’s production and management staff daily to ensure all the respective departments are aware of the sequencing and co-ordination of the automation system.
  • Liaise directly with Davie’s Quality control department to ensure full compliance with our established procedures.
  • Provide senior project management with regular progress scheduling and milestone achievements.
  • Determine the level of additional support required either for installation or commissioning of a system.
  • Ensure that any technical changes are evaluated, recorded, and approved by the client and the regulatory authorities.
  • Interpret a bid into the actual requirements onboard and contribute effectively with the evaluation team in terms of manpower, material, and scheduling elements.
  • Attend vessel sea trials and undertake an actively lead role in the development of the Sea Trial procedures and subsequent proving activity to the satisfaction of the client and the Regulatory Authorities
Qualifications
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Have a minimum of 15 years’ experience in the field of Marine Electrical Engineering either at sea or shipyard related.
  • Autocad skills
  • Provide the necessary skills and experience required to be able to review a technical bid and contribute to the overall understanding of a bids requirements in overall context of a vessel control system.
  • Have a full understanding of the current regulatory rules applied by the Industry standard bodies such as DNV, ABS, Lloyds Register etc.
  • Knowledge of new and emerging technologies such as Marine Battery Hybrid systems, Integrated DC Distribution for Drives or Fuel Cell systems
  • Full working knowledge of typical vessel systems such as:
  • Marine Diesel Engines.
  • Electrical Power Generation up to 11kV.
  • Large motor variable speed drives up to 3.5mW
  • Propulsion equipment including Bow thrusters, Azimuthing thrusters and CPP systems. 
  • HVAC and refrigeration systems. 
  • Fresh water production systems
  • Sewage and sanitary systems
  • Watertight sliding doors and hatches
  • Marine boilers
  • Vessel stability system (Anti Heeling)
  • Bilge and Ballast systems,
  • Tank Gauging systems (pneumatic and electronic)
  • Fuel and Lub oil transfer systems,
  • LNG (as a main fuel source)
  • Vessel navigation systems.
  • Fire alarm and Fire suppression systems.
  • A candidate with fluency in the French language would be advantageous but not essential, Davie will provide French language training courses.
