Shore Engineer

Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is inviting applications for permanent, full-time position of Shore Engineer with the Ferry Division of Halifax Transit. The Shore Engineer is administratively responsible to the Supervisors, Ferry Operations.  While working on a vessel, the Shore Engineer is functionally responsible to the Vessel’s Master.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Shore Engineer shall:

  • Implement planned and corrective maintenance activities in support of ferries and pontoon structures. Care, custody and maintenance of a spare parts inventory and updating the Fleet Focus Database.
  • Maintain detailed expertise in the troubleshooting and repair of equipment; provide advice to Deckhand/Engineers as applicable.
  • Direct the activities of Relief Engineers and Mates when they are assigned to maintenance activities.
  • Pump and clean vessel bilges in accordance with approved methodologies.
  • Inspect fire, life saving and safety equipment daily, notify the Supervisors and/or Manger, Ferry Operations of deficiencies, repair or replace as required.
  • Maintain the cleanliness and order at Ferry Maintenance Facility, 50 Mount Hope and Woodside Ferry Terminal Maintenance work area, and any associated storage spaces.
  • Assist in the preparation of specifications for engine rebuilds as well as vessel refits and drydocking’s.
  • Act as Ferry Engineer/Deckhand for short periods when required by the schedule or emergency short notice absences of regular personnel.
  • Fueling of ferries in accordance with prescribed practices.
  • Sourcing and purchasing of items as per HRM delegated procurement authorities associated with acquisition cards. 
  • Maintain logbooks and records in accordance with operational procedures.
  • Adherence to corporate policy as related to respectful and harassment free workplace.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Ferry Supervisors.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education and Experience:

  • Completion of Grade XII or equivalent.
  • Experience with and expertise with Caterpillar diesel engines, Twin Disc marine gearboxes, and Voith-Schneider propulsion units as well as onboard computerized systems and diagnostics tools. 
  • Experience with Microsoft software.
  • Experience with composing technical reports.

Technical/ Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:

Please note: All certificates must be recognized by Transport Canada

  • 4th Class Marine Engineer Certificate or higher
  • Current Marine Medical
  • Full M.E.D. Certificate (A2, B1, B2, C, D)
  • Valid First Aid
  • Current Confined Space Entry Certificate
  • Valid Driver’s License

Security Clearance Requirements: Applicants may be required to complete an employment security screening check.

WORK STATUS:  Permanent, Full Time.

HOURS OF WORK: 40 hours per week as per the ATU 508 Collective Agreement. 

SALARY: $68,674 as per the ATU 508 Collective Agreement.

WORK LOCATION: Halifax Transit Ferries: Alderney, Halifax and Woodside Ferry Terminals - Based on operational requirements, the work location and schedule are subject to change.
