The Owen Sound Transportation Company / Pelee Island Transportation Services is currently accepting applications for the position of 2nd Mate on the MV Pelee Islander II vehicle / passenger ferry.

In service since the fall of 2018, the Pelee Islander II is a 62 metre RORO ferry capable of carrying 36 vehicles from the Ontario mainland (Leamington / Kingsville) to Pelee Island, Ontario on Lake Erie.

A typical work rotation consists of 7 days on / 7 days off during the sailing season.

Job Duties:

·        Vessel officers are responsible for knowing, understanding, respecting, and promoting Bridge Team Management, the Vessel Emergency Plan, Muster Lists.  This includes maintaining the plan; training employees; participating in emergency preparedness training, drills and exercises; and maintaining records of all preparedness activities.

·        The 2nd Officer reports directly to the Chief Officer and is responsible for the assisting of the loading/unloading operation, supervising mooring operations, keeping a navigational watch.

Qualifications:

·        Watch Keeping Mate or Watchkeeping Mate, Near Coastal or Higher

·        Radio Operator’s License (or GOC)

·        Certificate of Proficiency for Vessel Personnel with Security Responsibilities (preferred)

·        MED training with respect to STCW Basic Safety

·        MED training with respect to proficiency in survival craft and rescue boats other than fast rescue boats

·        MED in advanced fire fighting

·        Marine Medical

Skills, Abilities and Experience

• Minimum 2 years recent experience
• Experience with Safety Management Systems
• Excellent leadership skills
• Excel in analyzing and adjusting work procedures for maximum efficiency
• Knowledge of English language is required
