Chief Engineer - Small Vessel

Pelee Island Transportation Company operates the Pelee Islander ferry between Pelee Island and Sandusky, Ohio from April to December. Licensed employees work seasonally from March to early November each year.

We seek to fill one Chief Engineer position working a 7 day on/off rotation. The company provides meals and accommodation is available on the vessel during your work rotation.

The Chief Engineer is responsible for the management of the engineering department and the administration of the Safety Management System within that department.


Reporting to the Captain, responsibilities of the Chief Engineer include:

  • The supervision of the engineering department personnel.
  • Administering safety procedures in the machinery spaces.
  • The application of the Labour Contracts and disciplinary code in respect to engine room personnel.
  • Establishing Standing Orders in the Engine Room.
  • Implementing engineering, operating and maintenance procedures.
  • The proper conduct of the preventive maintenance program for main, auxiliary, electrical and deck machinery.
  • The maintenance of the continuous machinery survey and related regulatory requirements.
  • Ensuring that proper records are kept of events related to the main and auxiliary machinery.
  • Ensuring that engineering duty arrangements are adequate to maintain a safe operation while underway and in port.
  • Maintaining constant communication with the Captain and Shore Operations with respect to engineering and personnel matters.
  • Maintaining inventory of supplies, spares and stores and procurement of replacements in a timely manner.
  • Maintaining the Oil Record Book.
  • Maintaining engineering records.
  • Ordering fuel and lube oils.
  • Analysis of water and lube oils as necessary.
  • Transferring fuels and the maintenance of oil transfer procedures in accordance with the Pollution Prevention Procedures and Regulations.
  • For carrying out Emergency Duties and participating in drills as per Muster List.


Qualification s, Experience and Abilities

  • The Chief Engineer holds a minimum valid Third Class (preferred) or Fourth Class (acceptable) certificate of competency plus at least three years of related experience (preferably from a passenger ferry operator).
  • General knowledge, understanding and experience in operating, maintaining and repairing engines, propulsion systems and ship apparatus.
  • Valid Marine Emergency Duties certification.
  • Valid Transport Canada Marine Medical Certificate.
  • Valid Canadian passport; Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status.
  • Ability to perform high physical demands including:
  • Regular need to climb stairs.
  • Lifting up to 50lbs.
  • Ability to stand for 2 hours at a time.
  • Ability to climb up to 12ft ladders.   
  • Ability to read, write, understand and speak English.
  • Proficient with Microsoft applications; ABS ship management system is an asset.
  • Preferred applicants possess initiative, are analytical problem solvers, have a team-oriented work style and a track record for safety at work
